UN secretary-general keen on working with Iranian officials

New York, IRNA - Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for the United Nations secretary-general, has said that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is keen on cooperating with Iranian authorities.

Addressing reporters on Sunday, Dujarric noted that the UN has been informed by election officials in Iran that Ebrahim Raisi won the presidential election on Friday, underling that the secretary-general wants to continue cooperation with the Iranian authorities based on mutual respect and in line with interests of both the Iranian nation and other regional states.

Asked about if the secretary-general has sent a congratulatory message to the president-elect in Iran, Dujarric stated that he has no doubt that the usual procedure will be taken in this respect.

The process will happen near the time of the inauguration ceremony of the president elect around six weeks later, he argued.

Following the victory of Ebrahim Raisi in the 13th presidential election in Iran, several officials and figures from around the world sent their congratulatory message.

In separate messages, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Emir of Kuwait Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Iraqi President Barham Salih and Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, Secretary-general of Hezbollah Hassan Nasrallah, Sultan of Oman Haitham bin Tariq, Afghanistan’s Chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation Abdullah Abdullah, Iraqi Kurdistan Region's President Nechirvan Barzani, and President of Armenia Armen Sarksyan congratulated Raisi’s victory in the 13th presidential election in Iran.

On Friday June 18, the 13th presidential election was held simultaneous with the sixth round of city and village councils elections, the first mid-term for 11th parliament’s by-election, and the second mid-term for the fifth Assembly of Experts election.

Out of over 59.3 million eligible voters in the 13th presidential election, nearly 29 million took part in the national event. Ebrahim Raisi won the presidential race with 17,926,345 votes out of the total 28,933,004 ballots, which shows 48.8 percent turnout.
