Shercliff is due to replace Rob Macaire in August.
He joined the Foreign Office in 1998 and has been serving in the British embassy in Tehran as Second Counselor during 2000-2003.
Working as a diplomat in British embassies in Baghdad and Washington is also on Shercliff’s record.
He has also served as British ambassador to Yemen in 2017-18.
