The working group consists of 14 members from different countries who are elected to serve for a five-year term from 2021 to 2025.
The working group is the major output of the third cycle of the Regular Process for Global Reporting and Assessment of the States of the Marine Environment, including Socioeconomic Aspects.
The group is also aimed at strengthening the relationship between international marine organizations like UNEP, IOC, CBD, IPCC and FAO and encouraging the countries to leverage the outcome of the working group in their national, regional and international policies.
A final report is delivered by the group to the UN General Assembly where it becomes effective after being passed by member states.
