Headlines in Iranian English-language dailies on June 13

Tehran, June 13, IRNA - The following headlines appeared in English-language newspapers in the Iranian capital on Sunday:


-- Rouhani hails Iran’s success in fighting coronavirus

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani highlighted his administration’s success in addressing the problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, saying every effort is being made to provide the necessary supply of vaccine.

In comments at a Saturday meeting of the National Task Force for Fighting the Coronavirus, Rouhani expounded on his administration’s measures and efforts to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic in Iran since the outbreak in late February 2020.

-- Iran’s two-month car manufacturing crosses 140,000

Three major Iranian carmakers, Iran Khodro Company (IKCO), SAIPA Group, and Pars Khodro, manufactured 140,759 vehicles during the first two months of the current Iranian year (March 21-May 21).

The production of the three companies increased by 11.2 percent compared to the last year’s same period in which the output stood at 126,582.

--- IME weekly trade tops $327m

The Iran Mercantile Exchange (IME) announced on Saturday that 634,540 tons of commodities, valued at over $327 million, were traded in its domestic trading and export halls in the week ending June 11.

A total of 253,528 tons of various products, worth over $174 million, were traded on IME’s domestic and export metal and mineral trading hall.


-- Iran Records Lowest Virus Deaths Since April

The number of patients who have died of the coronavirus infection in Iran over the past 24 hours has dropped to 115, the lowest death toll since April 1.
Health Ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari put the death toll from COVID-19 in Iran at 81,911, saying the disease has taken the lives of 115 patients over the past 24 hours. She said the total number of people tested positive for COVID-19 in the country has exceeded 3,020,500 following the detection of 7,444 new cases since yesterday.

-- Iran Regains Voting Rights at UN After Paying Dues

Iran regained its voting rights in the UN General Assembly on Friday after making the payment on its UN dues and lashed out at the United States for maintaining sanctions that have prevented it from accessing billions of dollars in foreign banks.
UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq announced that Iran had paid $16,251,298 and was able to vote in Friday’s election for five new members of the UN Security Council. He thanked banking and government authorities in various places, including South Korea, for enabling the payment to be made.

-- Iran Rout Cambodia in 2022 World Cup Qualifier

Iran have earned a 10-0 emphatic win over Cambodia in Group C of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023.
The win took Iran to 15 points in the table. Team Melli’s hopes of advancing to the final round for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Qualifiers are firmly in its own hands.
Cambodia, meanwhile, ended their campaign with just one point to their name from eight matches.


-- Iranian presidential candidates face off in final showdown

Seven presidential candidates gathered at the IRIB building on Saturday to discuss their plans and elaborate on their views on “people’s concerns” in the third and final presidential debate.

The candidates arrived at IRIB building at 3:30pm to prepare for the third debate. The candidates arrived in turn, based on the drawing of lots done last time. Alireza Zakani arrived first and responded to the reporters’ questions. He said people have dignity and no one should misuse the people's dignity.

-- Iran rout Qatar in FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Qualifiers

Iran national basketball team defeated Qatar 84-46 in Group E of the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Qualifiers on Saturday.

Samad Nikkhah Bahrami scored 16 points for Iran at the Prince Hamza Hall in Amman, Jordan, while Qatar’s Meho Haracic had a match-high 17 points.

Iran advanced to the top with nine points. Mehran Shahintab’s men will play Saudi Arabia on Monday.

Six movies by Iranian filmmakers will be competing in the 16th edition of the International Oriental Film Festival of Geneva in Switzerland.

The documentary “Walking with the Wind” by Mehdi Shadizadeh and director-writer Shahram Mokri’s drama “Careless Crime” will be screened in the official competition of the festival, which will take place from June 21 to 27 in Geneva and other municipalities. The documentary attempts to portray Abbas Kiarostami’s multiple artistic dimensions, and not just those of a filmmaking giant.
