Khatibzadeh meets with Iraqi FM

Tehran, June 9, IRNA - Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh met and held talks with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein on Wednesday.

During the meeting with the Iraqi Foreign Minister, Khatibzadeh discussed issues of mutual interest, regional developments, and the expansion of bilateral relations, including the pursuit of repayment of Iraqi debt, the Shalamcheh - Basrah railway, the latest visa waiver status by Baghdad, as well as how to cooperate in areas of public diplomacy between the two states.

Khatibzadeh arrived in Baghdad on Wednesday and was welcomed by his Iraqi counterpart Muhammad Saeed al-Sahhaf.

He held meetings with Iraq's national security adviser Qasim al-Araji, Chairman of the Iraqi Rule of Law Coalition Nuri al-Maliki, Leader of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI) Humam Hamoudi, and some Sunni ulemas.

He also elaborated on the latest regional developments and Iran-Iraq bilateral relations in Iraqi institutions.

Khatibzadeh discussed all-out support for the Iraqi government and legal and democratic processes based on Iraqi people's will, the Iraqi parliamentary elections, the grounds for the comprehensive expansion of ties between the two states, bilateral cultural and media cooperation, and Iran's policy towards strong, free, prosperous, developed, united and independent Iraq.
