Riyadh-Tehran cooperation beneficial for regional peace, security

Tehran, May 19, IRNA - "Iran" newspaper has published a memo, underlining that Riyadh-Tehran negotiations are kind of an important message from Iranian officials to neighboring states.

Hassan Beheshtipour, a foreign policy expert, wrote a memo in the "Iran" newspaper on Wednesday.

The memo says: Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani has said that the Islamic Republic is ready to cooperate with regional countries in creating a collective security system. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif also elaborated that Tehran is ready to put aside all differences with the neighboring states and unite with the neighbors to defend the rights of the Palestinian people. The fact is that Saudi Arabia and Iran are considered two main regional powers, who are not able to nullify each other's influence; thus, they accepted the fact and want to decrease the level of hostility to the level of a usual rivalry.

Iran has always emphasized the need for de-escalation, but Saudi Arabia thought that it could be the winner in the process of conflict.

Despite the fact that the misunderstanding of the situation by the Saudis sacrificed many times and resources, they have ended up with the decision to change their policy toward Iran. Developments on the ground in Yemen as well as the change of power in the White House showed Riyadh that it would be better for them to stop hostility. It is worth mentioning that ultra-regional countries followed the United States in dealing with the Islamic Republic and other players in the West Asia region.

Regional cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Iran has three important dimensions.

First, the collaboration can enhance regional partnership, because other countries' stances towards the region are directly or indirectly affected by policies and measures of both Riyadh and Tehran; so, normalization of ties between the two sides will help normalize the situation in the whole region.

Second, the intra-regional collaborations will help boost security in the region. The cooperation translates into the fact that the regional countries will not be considered a threat to each other.

Third, if so, ultra-regional states will not have an excuse to have a military presence in the region.

As a result of Riyadh-Tehran's willingness to improve relationships, other regional players such as Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait expressed readiness to hold negotiations. Indefinitely, Israel wants to play the role of a game-changer to stop the normalization of ties among regional nations. Understanding the situation, FM Zarif stressed the need for paying attention to the developments of Palestine, which is an important issue of the Islamic and Arab world. The sensitivity of the issue of Palestine can be a factor to start de-escalation in the region.
If foreign forces are not allowed to interfere in the de-escalation process and other developments are in line with this trend, the unstable situation of the region will change into a more stable one.
