Multi-million year old plant fossils discovered in NW Iran

Ardebil, June 11, IRNA – A number of multi-million year old plant fossils were discovered in Meshginshahr, Ardebil Province, northwestern Iran, said head of the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization of the province, Iman-Ali Imani.

"The fossils were accidentally discovered by a local man," said Imani.

Imani said that preliminary inspections show the fossils belong to trees, and added that paleontologists need to do more field research in the area; the inspections show that animal fossils will most probably be found in the area.

Meshginshahr is a rich region in terms of paleontology and archeology. Scores of eight-thousand year old figurines exist in Shahar Yeri.
