Tehran to host 70 foreign guests at APIF

Tehran, June 10, IRNA – Iran will play host to some 70 foreign guests from 50 countries in the field of technology and innovation at the first Asia Pacific Innovation Forum (APIF).

Last year, Iran suggested the forum to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). The idea was confirmed upon follow-up measures at the commission, and it was agreed upon to hold the first edition in Tehran.

ESCAP is a body affiliated to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) which is considered as one of UN's five pillars. It is comprised of various specialized regional bodies.

The first APIF will kick off in Tehran on June 11. The event will be attended by representatives of international agencies, including the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), and Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), as well as the representatives of 50 countries, including India, China, South Korea, Singapore, Russia, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

Various topics under the umbrella issue of the startups' role in sustainable development will be discussed. The topics range from women, governments' strategies, technological parks and investment to the role of south-south cooperation.

This will be a joint event under the title of technology and innovation between Iran and the UN, said Ahmadreza Alaei, Secretary of the 1st APIF.

He said that the forum is an opportunity for benefiting from competitive advantage with regard to creating an innovative and technological ecosystem, as well as using the UN potential for disseminating the information to the member states.

International index shows that Iran is of a premier position in terms of creating such ecosystem, particularly in comparison to the ESCAP members, the Iranian official said adding that the event would be a good opportunity for establishing technological and knowledge-based cooperation with the world.
