Zarif says EU is obliged to open way for Iran economy

Tehran, June 9, IRNA – Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said Sunday that the EU is obliged to open the way for Iranian economic activities in accordance with the nuclear deal.

"The responsibility of the Europeans and other signatories to the nuclear deal is to normalize the condition for Iran's economic activities," he told reporters noting that under the nuclear deal, what is important is the outcome, not just taking actions and saying "we tried but it didn't work".

Zarif was making a reference to the deal signed by Iran on one side and the world major powers on the other in 2015. Under the deal Tehran agreed to curb its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.

In May 2018, the US President Donald Trump pulled out of the deal and reimposed sanctions on Iran. The European signatories pledged to cover the damage through devising a trade mechanism, but Iran is criticizing Europe for failing to deliver on promise.

Iran can also do the same from now on, the top Iranian diplomat said.

He said, the Europeans are not in a position to criticize Iran on the issues that do not have to do with the nuclear deal.

Noting that the West's policies in the region have always been damaging law and order, Zarif added that the west gives green light to the totalitarian regimes in the Middle East to commit crimes.

Commenting on the deadline Iran set on the first anniversary of the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal, Zarif said, "It is a matter of Islamic Republic of Iran's plan. We announced our plan by saying that we would do so during the first 60 days, and will take other measures within the next 60 days, and then the following steps will be decided."

"We will decide proportionate to what they do," he said.

The Iranian foreign minister also noted that the shuttle diplomacy, the upcoming visits, including that of Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas to Tehran as well as that of the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to Kyrgyzstan and Dushanbe, are opportunities for Iran to clarify its policies and finding solutions for confronting the policies that have targeted the entire world.
