Saudi opportunism in turmoil of Middle East

Tehran, May 28, IRNA - The permission of a $8 billion arms deal to Saudi Arabia by Donald Trump has increasingly drawn observers' attention to Saudi Arabia's role in exacerbating tension between Iran and the United States; tensions desired by Saudi Arabia, if it leads to a military conflict no security in the Middle East will be left.

Amid tensions between Iran and the United States, News reports on the issuance by the US president of permission for the sale of weapons worth $ 8 billion to Saudi Arabia once again portrays analysts' attention to the relationship between Riyadh and Washington and the Saudi actions in the midst of conflicts between Iran and the United States.

After dispatching 1,500 more troops to the region under the pretext of strengthening “cover and defensive power”, the president of the United States issued an permission to sell weapons to Saudi Arabia without permission from Congress.

Trump, referring to a rare federal law, described the state of tension with Iran as an "emergency" and with bypassing the congress, he personally signed permission to conduct 22 arms deal worth $8 billion with Saudi Arabia.

Congressmen say that if the deal was referred to Congress under the usual routine of such a project, they would not have agreed to it, and the president with declaring a state of emergency, is moving in line with the intentions of the hawkish members of the cabinet and in line with Saudi demands.

In the face of growing conflict between Iran and the United States, observers referred to Saudi Arabia's role in simmering the fighting between Tehran and Washington and exploiting this tense atmosphere.

Saudi Arabia; pouring fuel onto fire

It's about three weeks that the Americans have sent their military equipment to the region, relying on alleged threats by Iran's measures; Abraham Lincoln, Arlington carriers, Patriot missile systems, B-52 bombers ... These days have been deployed in the Persian Gulf to defend the interests of the United States and its allies against what is called worrying behaviors of Iran" via the so-called "deterrence".

Meanwhile, this American adventurism has been welcomed by some Arab leaders from the outset. Some while ago, Al-Sharq Al-Awsat daily announced the agreement of the Saudi government and several other countries in the Persian Gulf region with the presence of the US forces in their lands and the Persian Gulf waters.

In addition, the Saudi effort to hold a summit of Arab states on the sidelines of the summit of the Islamic countries in Mecca, also with Iran's focus, shows the will of the Riyadh leaders in directing the confrontation between Iran and the United States.

Saudi media, close to the ruling body, have been publishing news in recent weeks to encourage Trump to tighten his stance against Iran. Last week, the Arab News newspaper, close to the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, explicitly stated in his editorial: They (Iran) should be crushed severely.

A warning to Trump about Saudi Arabia

Many observers warn Washington leaders about the dangerous role of Saudi Arabia to push the United States to war with Iran. The New York Times wrote in a warning last week that, with the encouragement of Saudi Arabia, the US is moving towards a clash with Iran.

In addition to American media, the European analysts are warning against the dangers of Saudi activity in this sensitive atmosphere. "I think Donald Trump does not want a military conflict in the region, but the influence of some countries, such as Israel, Saudi Arabia, are encouraging him to enter the war," Admiral Lord West, the former chief of staff of the British Navy, said last week in an interview with the Daily Star newspaper.

The British military figure said that Western countries should do all they can to bring Iran to the negotiating table. Otherwise, there would be a possibility of a nuclear war in the Middle East.

The role of Saudi Arabia in encouraging tensions between Iran and the United States in the region is such that some analysts analyze the recent events in the context of the opposition between Saudi Arabia and Iran (and not Iran and the United States). A Turkish newspaper, Yeni Shafaq, wrote a report some time ago, “A power struggle between Arab and Fars is hidden behind the Western hegemony. Saudi Arabia thinks this is in its favor, but the current tension will lead to the destruction of the region and the victory of the United States and the Zionist regime.”

Saudi Arabia has for many years instead of relying on the internal security components, such as focusing on regional engagement, regional institutionalization, collective securitization, cooperation and synergy in confronting the main sources of instability, such as foreign intervention, terrorism, etc., is trying to import security from the western countries with a stern effort.

Failure to take into account the security software components along with the hardening of its hard-core components, such as filling weapons arsenals, will not only not lead to an improvement in the security index, but will also create a dangerous arms race with increasing insecurity for all countries of the region; providing ground for the confrontation and the tension where the fighting equipment is at disposal.
