US threatening health, food security in region: Iran's envoy

Tehran, May 28, IRNA – Iran's representative to the World Organization for Animal Health blasted the US sanctions as serious threats against health and food security in the region.

"We believe that reaching a unified health strategy requires all countries cooperation, and Iran is a key country in the region with an important role in controlling and eradicating zoonoses" Iran Veterinary Organization Alireza Rafi'ipoor said at the 87th general session of OIE-World Organization for Animal Health.

US sanctions have affected medicines, trade, food and animal products, as numerous problems have been caused for Iran in procurement of medicine, diagnostic kits, and vaccines, he said.

"The same condition can occur for any country," he warned.

He called on the presiding board of OIE to address the issue in order to take measures for health threats.

The Iranian official also met with his Turkmen counterpart and emphasized the importance of cooperation between the two countries for control and eradication of diseases in the region.

The both sides agreed to hold a border meeting for meticulous assessment of the situation and mutual cooperation in coming weeks.

The global general assembly opened in Paris on May 26 and will wrap up on May 31.
