South Korea keen on trade ties with Iran: Official

Tehran, May 27, IRNA – South Korea is doing its best to save trade relations with Iran in spite of sanctions, senior Iranian official said on Monday.

Pouya Firouzi, the secretary general of Iran-South Korea joint chamber of commerce said that Seoul reaffirmed commitment to save trade relations with Iran despite the South Korean banks are afraid of punitive fines the US Department of Treasury may charge them for doing business with Iran.

He made the remarks in an exclusive interview with IRNA.

The Iranian companies and Iranian co-chairman of the joint chamber of commerce held consultations with the South Korean counterparts to speed up import of pharmaceutical items, Firouzi added.

Hossein Tanhaie, the former co-chairman of the joint chamber of Iran-South Korea had earlier proposed to draw closer economic relations between the two countries by forming a joint barter fund for commodities.

According to the latest figures, in the last eight months of 2018, Iranian non-oil exports to South Korea stood at 2.57 billion dollars and that South Korea exported 1.7 billion dollars goods and household appliances to Iran.

“South Korea is the third economic partner of Iran after China and the UAE,” he added.
