Iraq seeking stronger ties with Iran: Speaker

Baghdad, May 26, IRNA – Iraq's parliament speaker Mohamad al-Halbousi on Sunday called for stronger bilateral cooperation with Iran.

In a meeting with Iran's foreign minister Javad Zarif, the Iraqi speaker Mohamad al-Halbousi said that Baghdad is eager to have more cooperation with Iran, as well as other countries in the region.

Warning against increasing tensions in the region, Halbousi said that any dispute should only be solved through negotiations and peaceful ways.
The Iraqi lawmaker emphasized that Baghdad's stance on regional crises is remaining impartial.

Meanwhile, he noted that his country would play its pivotal role to abate the tension between Iran and the US.
Baghdad is supporting security and safety for all its neighbors at all levels, and calls on all players to keep the region from escalation, he said.
Zarif, for his part, praised Baghdad's stance on rapprochement of the regional countries, adding that Tehran welcomes all efforts for solving problems with countries in the region.
The two sides at the meeting also discussed the latest developments in the region and bilateral relations.
Iran's foreign minister arrived in Baghdad Saturday and met with Iraqi president.
It is the third visit to Iraq by Iran's foreign minister comes amid the recent military moves by the US in the region.
