Iraq: Reinforcing ties with Iran creates stability in region

Baghdad, May 26, IRNA – Iraq's President Barham Salih termed reinforcing relations with Iran and other Islamic states as the best way for boosting stability in the region and establishing balanced ties in order to guarantee mutual interests with other countries especially the neighbors.

Speaking in a meeting with the Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Barham Salih stressed the importance of reinforcing relations between Iran and Iraq and underlined the need for efforts to develop cooperation with Islamic and Arab countries.

During the meeting, the two reviewed the latest regional developments as well as bilateral ties and stressed finding a peaceful solution to regional issues.

The need to prevent conflicts and escalation of tensions in the region, maintaining constructive talks aiming at reinforcing peace in the region and the importance of adopting joint efforts for protecting the region against sanctions were among other topics discussed by both sides.  

Meanwhile, Zarif expressed Tehran's interest in developing cooperation with Iraq in all fields.

He added that Iran is supporting Iraq in all fields.

Zarif arrived in Baghdad on Saturday at the head of a high-ranking political delegation and was welcomed by the Iraqi deputy foreign minister Nezar Kheirollah.

He earlier held talks with his Iraqi counterpart Mohamed Ali Alhakim, Prime Minister Adil Abdelmahdi and Speaker of the Council of Representatives of Iraq Mohammad Al-Halbousi.
