1.5 tons of illegal drugs seized in SE Iran

Zahedan, May 19, IRNA – Iran's police has seized 1.5 tons of illegal drugs in southeastern province of Sistan and Balouchestan, a local commander said on Sunday.

Mohammad Qanbari, the commander of police in the province said that based on a tip-off about transferring narcotics by armed smugglers overnight, the police special operation groups in cooperation with three teams from Ammar military base identified the transportation corridor, and conducted a surprise operation that led to an armed conflict and seizing the pick-up car.

In the operation, two drug traffickers were detained and 1.551 tons of opium, plus two shotguns, a number of bullets, a side-arm and two cartridges were seized.

The commander also said that investigations for detaining other members of the gang are underway.

Bordering Pakistan, Sistan and Blouchestan has one of the porous frontiers that is used by drug traffickers.
