Iran Univ. initiates new clean fuel processing method

Tehran, May 19, IRNA – Researchers of Chemistry Department of Amir-Kabir University in Tehran initiated producing clean fuel by new processing method with output at the world standards.

Gasoline contains a group of sulfuric compounds, for example thiophene, which are released in forms of sulfur oxide during combustion that pollute the atmosphere, said Hoda Safa'ee, the project manager.

She said that the releasing of such gases will result in more global warming, can cause respiratory complications and also acid rains, polluting waters and causing deforestation.

'In the recent years, to protect the environment, some strict laws have been passed to limit sulfur use in fossil fuels, like gasoline, and Iran has been taking some steps as well.'

Safa'ee said that among the steps taken by Iran is supply of Euro4 fuels that contain 50ppm of sulfur, adding that in Europe, the US and other developed countries the fuels have less than 10ppm of sulfur.

Taking inversion in winters in Tehran or the air pollution of Iranian metropolises, e.g. Ahvaz, research in the area is critically essential, she said.

Most Iranian and non-Iranian refineries use hydrodesulfurization, which is highly effective and commercialized, yet it is difficult to use for creating clean fuel at world standards, and that’s because there are some thiophene combinations in gasoline that are resistant to the method, she added.

She said that the scientists tried reduce the time of the process by improving the catalysts, using active oxidizers or using surfactant.

Impinging systems have an extraordinary function in transferring mass, she said, adding that Amir-Kabir University scholars have published 30 articles in the field.

She said that in this method, a series of preliminary experiments were done to determine the effective parameters, like temperature, amount of the catalyst, amount of oxidizers and the amount of injected currents.

Then, the experiment was done in the optimal conditions in the impinging stream reactors, and it was repeated in the batch reactor that is normally used for oxidative desulfurization reactions.
