Official: US sanctions block int'l aid to Iran flood survivors

Tehran, May 18, IRNA – Chairman of Mashad City Council said no freedom-seeker in the world will accept inhumane sanctions which have intrigued issuing aid to flood-hit Iranians.

Addressing the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Geneva, Mohammad Reza Heidari said certainly the international community will not be able to give suitable response to stop the US from blocking aid as a humane and non-ideological issue.

He urged the United Nations and the international bodies to adopt a new mechanism for preventing imperialism's interests.

He went on to say that unexpected accidents happen in any country and governments are not able to compensate for them alone, adding that unfortunately in recent floods in Iran just a few countries helped Iran.

The floods caused by unprecedented flash rains in various parts of Iran in March and early April claimed the lives of scores of people and inflicted huge damages on infrastructures, including bridges and roads.

Two million people were affected by the floods and hundreds of thousand people are living in tents.

A number of countries forwarded humanitarian aid to Iran.
