Russia, US; wall of mistrust in between

Moscow, May 16, IRNA - After about three years of growing tensions between Moscow and Washington, finally, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo headed to the city of Sochi, on the Black Sea coast, to consult with Russian authorities over the differences between the two countries on a way out of the cold relations that the United States initiated.

Donald Trump took power nearly three years ago and always claimed to change the US approach to Russia, but soon faced the widespread pressures of his rivals.

The US hegemony on demonizing Russia in the world, and given his accusations of collusion with the Russians in order to win the presidential election took a different position than the slogan against the Kremlin.

Thus, the extent of the US-Russian differences by of Trump presidency not only did not decrease, but the US sanctions against Russia over the crisis in Syria and the disagreement between the two countries on Ukraine increased more and until the United States imposed more extensive sanctions against the Russians and targeted a close list of Vladimir Putin associates.

Britain also sparked the flames of these differences, and accused Russia of engaging in the assassination of Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia practically placed the United States against Russia.

The growing pressure from the Democrats, serious Russian-American disagreements on various international issues on issues such as JCPOA, nationalists in Ukraine, Yemen, how to resolve the crisis in Korea, Venezuela and, more broadly, the problem of the illegal presence of US troops in Syria many saw the rise of tensions between the two countries as reminder of the second cold war.

During the Trump era, the United States not only did not take its former President Barack Obama's path against Moscow, but also made actions against Russia that Obama had refused to do. The tension in Moscow-Washington relations at the time of the Trump led to the expulsion of many Russian diplomats and staff in the United Nations in addition to the closure of two consulates from the four Russian consulates in the United States, and the reception of US visa by Russian diplomats, and complicated the issues, and sometimes impossible, although Trump always praised Putin and claimed that he wanted to improve relations between the two countries.

** U-turn of US diplomacy apparatus

By the end of the investigation by Robert M. Mueller on the possibility of Donald Trump's collusion with the Russians to win the presidential election and the publication of his report on this matter, and the White House officials' perception of the acquittal of Trump for collusion, the space for the Trump was ready to break the ice with Moscow.

The first Trump’s action after the release of Mueller's report was a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin for more than an hour that recently met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Following the talks that the two sides called constructive, the Foreign Ministers of the two countries met in a neutral country (Finland), and the ground was paved for Mike Pompeo's visit to Russia until he traveled to Russia on Tuesday.

Mike Pompeo, before meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, in a Tweet stated that in some cases we might agree with others and disagree with others, but when it comes to national interests, we must find a way forward.

Lavrov-Pompeo meeting ended as the two sides called for improved relations and the opening of a new space in their cooperation, although many believe that Moscow and Washington are in serious disagreements in various fields and talk about the normalization of relations in this space seems to be an ideal and far-reaching goal.

Perhaps the most significant part of Pompeo's remarks in his meeting with Lavrov was that Trump is determined to improve relations with Russia, although the Russians believe that Russiapohobia has become a kind of political competition within the United States and is a tool to hit rivals by a powerful group in Washington.

The head of the Russian diplomacy also said during a meeting with Pompeo that Moscow was ready to build a constructive and more responsible relationship with the United States if Washington was prepared, but there are many suspicions gave been piled up about each other that causes neither of these parties to win.

The serious disputes between the two sides at the post-meeting press conference also became apparent as Lavrov once again emphasized Russia's stance, and stated as wrong the withdrawal from the JCPOA, threatening Nicholas Maduro, the legal president of the Venezuela, the claim of collusion between that Russia and Trump, the uncertainty about the 'Start 2' pact and the vagueness of the position of the Ukrainian government regarding the disagreements with Russia. Lavrov gave a note to Pompeo, which included US involvement in Russian affairs.

He asked the question from his American counterpart, “Is Washington, who wrongly accuses Russia of interfering in its affairs, willing to stop interfering in Russia's affairs and the two sides agree upon this?'

Pompeo, in response while tried to show that the United States is not seeking to destabilize the various regions of the world and most importantly the Persian Gulf, to justify its anti-Iranian measures, once again pointed finger to Tehran and argued that Russia and the United States can work together on a range of topics, given to national interest.

Pompeo's visit with Putin was also held on Tuesday at Russian President Vladimir Putin's residence, where the media reported that Pompeo was forced to wait more than three hours for the Russian president to travel from Astrakhan to Sochi.

Putin spoke of his country's willingness to improve relations with the United States, saying that the report by inspector Meuller's of Russia's involvement in the US election was incorrect and a move to impede normalization of relations between two world powers.

In sum, Moscow and Washington, despite the efforts of powerful political groups in the United States to distance themselves from Russia and proximity to their allies in Brussels, seem to be struggling to thaw the ice of their relations slowly.

Some argue that the Trump team is seeking to resolve its international failures to resolve the various crises that it initiated, with the help of Russia, which, in the American election, found a better record than the current uncertain situation but to accompany the Russians with Washington, which seems practically impossible without giving Russia a special concession.
