Iran dismantles international gang of drug traffickers

Bandar Abbas, May 14, IRNA – Senior Iranian judicial official said on Tuesday that a big international organized gang of drug traffickers were arrested to face justice in Iran.

Hojjatoleslam Mohammad Sadegh Akbari, head of Judicial administration for southern Iranian province of Hormuzgan, told reporters that the gang was named Persian Gulf alligator.

About the details of the case, the official said the gang leader was sentenced to death and 16 other members of the drug trafficking organization were handed down a total of 472-year prison.

They should also pay penal sum of 2.3 billion rials, he added.

The international gang of drug traffickers had started their illegal activities two years ago from Iran's eastern neighbors of Afghanistan and Pakistan, said the official adding they expanded their activities in southeastern Iranian province of Sistan-Baluchestan, southern province of Hormuzgan and Fars, and then in Tehran.

During their illegal activities, the drug traffickers were to bring 400 tons of different kinds of narcotics to Iran, but most of the cargos were found and seized by the vigilant Iranian security forces.

Iran is the main trafficking route from Afghanistan and Pakistan to the European and Asian countries.

Although fight against drug trafficking activities has cost Iran a lot, the country has been strongly taking anti-narcotic measures over the past thirty years.

Anti-drug campaign has claimed lives of about 4,000 Iranian policemen in armed clashes on border areas with Afghanistan.
