Iran supplies 20% of Eastern Mediterranean blood units

Ilam, May 12, IRNA - Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization says 20 percent of all Eastern Mediterranean donated blood units come from Iran.

'10 million of the world blood units are in the Eastern Mediterranean, from which Iran's share is 2 million people, that is 20 percent,' said Bashir Haji Beygi, general manager of the Public Relations Department of the Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization on Sunday.

Eastern Mediterranean denotes the countries that are geographically located to the east of the Mediterranean Sea. They include Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt, Cyprus, Greece, Syria, Palestine, Turkey, Jordan and Libya.

'Iran now is among the five most developed Asian countries in blood transfusion,' Haji Beygi added during a ceremony in the western Iranian city of Ilam.

The official added that Iran is the only Eastern Mediterranean country with a national rare blood donor programme and is International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) working party among 20 world countries.
