WHO warns on neglecting mental health in world

Zanjan, May 5, IRNA - The World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Sunday against a global tendency to neglect the importance of mental health.

'Unfortunately, mental health is ignored in many parts of the world and isn't paid attention to as they heed physical health,' said WHO representative in Iran Christoph Hamelmann in an address to the fifth Mental Health International Exhibition of Photography that is being held in the western Iranian city of Zanjan.

He also warned that mental disorders, if left untreated, would have economic consequences as well which ammounts to about 1 trillion USD globally every year.

Hamelmann cautioned: 'although suicide itself is not a mental disorder, these disorders can cause suicide'.
