Russia acting cautiously on Iran-US conflict

Moscow, April 21, IRNA – Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies, RAS Institute of Oriental Studies said Russia has criticized US choice against the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), but it will act cautiously as regard Iran-US conflict.

Speaking to IRNA, Boris Dolgov said Moscow on the one hand considers the US act as illegal and on the other hand shows self- restraint since Russia is after developing relations with both sides.

Iran is Russia’s partner in Syria and in Astana talks so it will be in favor of Russia to see stability in Iran, he added.

On the other hand, official Kremlin officials do not want to make relations with the US shaky so they behave carefully in this regard, he noted.

It is obvious that the US has taken the policy to put pressure on Iran and Washington officials have focused on accusing Iran, Dolgov said, adding they do not consider as necessary finding proof for their anti-Iran allegations.

The US policy is being implemented in various aspects the most important of which will be creating changes in Islamic World, he said.

He reiterated the fact that Washington is trying to make Iran isolated among Islamic countries.

The important tool that US is taking advantage of is Salafi and Wahhabi clerics who try to create discrimination among Shia and Sunni and Saudi Arabia is spending millions of dollar on them, Dolgov said.

He went on to say that Saudi Arabia has become coordinated with Israel as regard anti-Iran policies, adding that a triangle of Riyadh-Washington-Tel-Aviv has been formed.

Trump is implementing anti-Iran policies by provoking Saudi Arabia and Israel, Russian expert said.

He noted that US act to blacklist the IRGC will bring about serious consequences in the region.

Pointing to the fact that Iran is a powerful country in the region, Dolgov said US acts are aiming to reinforce Israel position in the region and to weaken Middle East countries.

'The IRGC is the Iranian government's primary means of directing and implementing its global terrorist campaign,' US President Donald Trump said earlier in a statement.

'We will continue to increase financial pressure and raise the costs on Iran for its support of terrorist activity until it abandons its malign and outlaw behavior,' Trump said.

Foreign Minister Zarif recommended that Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) should add American forces in West Asia, known as the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), to its terrorist groups' list.

In a letter to President Hassan Rouhani, he also called for a retaliatory move by labeling the United States Central Command as a terrorist organization and the US government as a terrorist sponsor.

Zarif described the move as 'another misguided election-eve gift to Netanyahu'.
