Reconstruction of flood-hit areas officially kicks off

Tehran, April 17, IRNA – Iran's President Hassan Rouhani on Wednesday announced the official start of reconstruction operation of flood-hit regions under the supervision of the country's Interior Ministery.

Flash floods caused by unprecedented heavy rain across Iran claimed lives of at least 80 people and displaced thousands more.

Due to the disaster, numerous buildings and infrastructures, including roads and bridges, both in rural and urban areas were destroyed or damaged.

Hailing the efforts made by Iranian bodies in charge of handling the natural disaster, Rouhani said during today's cabinet meeting that drinking waters has started running in 3,900 villages out of 4,000 where the tap water was cut only three weeks after the flood.

According to the president, power has been restored to 2,352 villages out of 2,352 affected by a blackout due to the natural disasters.

Initial assessment shows that the disaster inflicted some 40,000 billion tomans (8,401,280,000 euros) damage on various sectors, Rouhani said.
