Europe has no excuse to delay INSTEX: Zarif

Tehran, April 14, IRNA – Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Sunday criticized the European states for delay in functioning the Instrument in Support of Trade Exchanges (INSTEXT).

'To implement the mechanism, Iran needed to launch a corresponding representative, which started last week; now the Europeans have no pretext for futher delay,' he said on the sidelines of unveiling the online economic diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Talking to the reporters, Zarif said that after the US withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCOPA) last May, Europe committed itself to launch a mechanism to ease trade with Iran.

Now they need to try hard to fulfill their commitments; they are very slow and they should not assume that Iran will wait for them forever, said Zarif.

'Iran has good ties with its neighbors and has launched similar mechanisms with them, working well,' said Zarif, adding, 'We have no idea how much time the Europeans need to launch a rudimentary mechanism.'

Regarding US move on April 8 to announce the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist entity, Iran's foreign minister said that the first retaliatory move Tehran made was that the Supreme National Security Council issued a statement and named the American forces in West Asia, known as the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) a terrorist group and the US a state sponsor of terrorism.

He said that Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Majlis (the Iranian Parliament) are consulting about other reactions and some proposals have been made for the purpose.

Zarif added that he has written letters to the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the UN Security Council about the US wrongful act in breach of the international law and Washington's very wrong policies in the Middle East.

He said that today, on which US' decision will be implemented, Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs will send a letter to foreign ministers of all the countries in the world to remind them that it is necessary to take a stance against the US unprecedented and dangerous move.
