Iran struggling with flood

Tehran, March 26, IRNA – Flash rains across Iran have killed dozens and injured tens of people, with all organizations and entities in Iran, including armed forces, struggling to rescue flood-affected people.

Iran's Meteorological Organization has predicted that rain in a number of provinces would see more rainfalls and all organizations should be on alert in next 24 hours as the warnings are still in place.

At least 28 provinces out of 31 have been affected by floods, and hundreds of people are now displaced.

Countinuous heavy rain brought floods to Shiraz, the provincial capital of Fars Province, in southern Iran.

Officials say at least 18 people, mostly visitors from other parts, were killed and tens of people were injured.

The flood hit Shiraz just days after the same disaster inflicted damage on people in the northern Province of Golestan and Mazandaran.

The disastrous situation has coincided with national holidays of Nowruz in Iran that is considered the high season for Iranian travels.

Most of the people caught in flood were those on interprovincial roads. Reports say that a number of bridges in Lorestan Province to the west of Iran were either damaged or totally destroyed.

All rescue and relief organizations along with popular aid groups have been mobilized upon Iranian senior officials' order for helping the affected people. The country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has called on all armed forces to step in for accelerating the process of providing aid to flood-hit people.

Special envoys of Iran's President have been sent to various provinces across Iran to assess and manage the situation.

Flood warnings have also been issued for other Iranian provinces, including Tehran, Qom, Kermanshah, Markazi, Isfahan, Khorasan. Local officials in Tehran have assured that all capacities and forces are on high alert for any extreme situation.

It has also been predicted that extreme weather will hit Iran's various provinces at the weekend.

Iran Road Maintenance & Transportation Organization has reported that a number of main roads were blocked due to heavy rain, snow and possible risk of avalanche, landslide, and river floods. People are warned to avoid unnecessary trips.

A number of foreign ambassadors in Tehran, including those of Austria, Switzerland, Turkey and Norway in separate messages expressed sympathy with victims of the deadly floods in Iran.
