Iran's Zarif: Rouhani's trip taking place in important era

Baghdad, March 10, IRNA – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said President Rouhani's visit to Iraq will take place in an important era in the history of Iraq.

Addressing a meeting with Iranian and Iraqi experts, Zarif expressed happiness for his current trip to Iraq which is taking place in about one month.

The relations between Iran and Iraq are strategic, he said, adding that no country will be able to weaken it.

Zarif added 'we are happy that President Rouhani's tour is happening in an important historic era after victory against the ISIS'.

He also referred to Iraq's victory in recent parliamentary elections and also continuation of diplomatic procedures and establishing trans-sectarian and trans-ethnic system in Iraq.

The Iranian foreign minister congratulated this big victory for democracy and for Iraqi people.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Zarif referred to his meeting with Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Alhakim which focused on bilateral and regional issues.

Zarif arrived in Baghdad late on Saturday at the head of a high-ranking delegation.

Zarif is in Baghdad to prepare arrangements for President Hassan Rouhani’s upcoming official visit to the neighboring state. He was welcomed by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry’s officials.

Rouhani is to travel to Iraq at the official invitation of that country’s president and prime minister on Monday at the head of a high-ranking delegation.

During his three-day visit to Iraq, Rouhani is to confer with the senior Iraqi cleric Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Sistani.

Exploring avenues for promoting bilateral relations in the political, economic and cultural fields are among the main objectives of the Iranian president’s official visit to Iraq.
