Sanctions not able to impede Iranian, Russian policies: Official

Moscow, Feb 23, IRNA – A senior Russian official said here on Saturday that despite difficulties caused by sanctions, Moscow and Tehran will follow their own well-established domestic and foreign policies.

Sanctions will surely have their impacts on both countries’ progress but can never halt the trend of their development, Frants Klintsevich, member of Russia’s Federation Council Committee on Defense and Security, told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) in an interview in Moscow.

Klintsevich believed dialogue was the best base for establishment of good ties and removal of disputes.

Talking of Iran’s regional role in countering terrorism, the official said Tehran plays an effective role in course of developments in in Syria and the Middle East region.

He said groups opposed to the Syrian government have to come to terms with this reality and accept it.

And disagreements with Iran have come from this point, because Iran plays a prominent role in fight against the terrorist group of Daesh (ISIS) and the new form of international terrorism which has no relations with Islam, he added.

He further termed the phenomenon of terrorism as the plague of century against which Iran has always been actively fighting.

Since 2012, Russia has faced 65 packages of sanctions from the United States.

Also, the US re-imposed anti-Iran sanctions in Nov 2018, just few months after its exit from the Iran Deal formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Contrary to the US anti-Iran measures, many world leaders including the European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini believe that the Iran Deal should be kept alive.
