Bandar Abbas, Feb 21, IRNA - Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) member states will hold a joint drill in the next Iranian calendar year (to start on March 21, 2019), top Iranian commander said.

IONS member states will hold a joint drill in the next Iranian calendar year, aimed at exercising anti-piracy measures and ensuring the region's security, Commander of Iranian Army Navy Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi said on Thursday.

The Indian Ocean Naval Symposium, commonly known as IONS, organizes a series of biennial meetings among the littoral states of the Indian Ocean region.

It provides a forum to increase maritime security cooperation, providing a chance for discussion of regional maritime issues and promote friendly relationships among the member nations.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the commander referred to Iran's 'Velayat-97' navy's successful drill in key Strait of Hormuz and noted that Islamic Republic of Iran's armed forces have been able to establish sustainable security in the strait.

Commenting about the potential presence of Iranian navy in the Atlantic Ocean, he said that the Iranian navy is ready to dispatch its naval fleet to the region anytime it recieves commands to do so.
