Europe must fulfill responsibility for countering US unilateralism: Iran

Tehran, Feb 18, IRNA- Foreign Ministry spokesman said the Islamic Republic of Iran was expecting European countries to rightly cope with America's unilateralism.

'Europeans have repeatedly told us that they are against American unilateralism, but for dealing with this policy of US rulers and the dangerous situation that this policy can make, the Europeans have to fulfill their responsibility appropriately,' said Bahram Qasemi at his weekly press conference on Monday, pointing to the United States' unilateralism.

'Despite the slogans that Europe has put forward, Europe has not been able to execute them in practice, and therefore our complaint of the Europeans remains about the role of this union as claiming current of convergence that needs to bear the cost of confronting unilateralism,' Senior Iranian official said.

In response to a question about the visit of India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to Tehran and whether a policy for joint pressure on Pakistan was expected, the spokesman asserted, 'Our relationship with the countries of the region is an independent relationship, and we are pursuing our foreign policy based on history, type of relations, the background and previous cooperation and do not merge the facts.”

He went on to say that, “Our relationship is a good and long-standing relationship. The two countries have good cooperation in economic matters. India is an important industrial country and for many reasons we have many contacts. Moreover, with the new kind of cooperation between the two countries, as well as the important issue of Chabahar, there will be more efforts to improve the level of relations.”

Qasemi highlighted, 'Terrorism is a disaster that has challenged many countries in the region, and the fight requires international consensus and cooperation from all the countries of the region. This can be considered a fundamental argument between India and Iran.”

In response to another question regarding the statements by British Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt about the Yemeni crisis, the high-level diplomat said that what the British Foreign Minister had proposed about Yemen was a mistake saying that the Iranian Foreign Minister had made an undertaking about Yemen.

The official asserted, “We have been talking to all effective countries, both inside and outside the region, about the issue of Yemen and the aggression that have been taking place against this country and the disasters of this country, and talked several rounds with European countries in recent months and we tried to provide a ground to stop the coalition's offensive, reach cease-fire and send humanitarian aids.”

Foreign Ministry spokesman said that ultimately the Iranian efforts led to Stockholm summit, and underlined British Foreign Minister's backing to a commitment that some groups had raised in Stockholm and he has not addressed Iran. Yemen is an independent state and the Yemeni people themselves decide on it and Iran cannot give any commitment in place of other countries.
