Lebanon urged Iran to help return Syrian refugees

Tehran, Feb 11, IRNA - Michel Aoun, President of Lebanon has called for Iran's aid to Lebanon for helping Syrian refuges' repatriation.

Aoun made the remarks in a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Monday.

During the meeting both sides discussed developments in the region and Lebanon.

They also reviewed Iran's position toward the developments.

The problem of the Syrian refugees in Lebanon requires an essential solution which is their return to Syria, Aoun said.

Referring to serious consequences of Syrian refugees on the economic, social and security situations in Lebanon, he urged Iran to play a role in that regard.

In the wake of tension in Syria and imposed war on the country by some international powers and their allies, a number of Syrian citizens were forced to leave Syria for Lebanon.

Lebanese officials announced that there are over one million Syrian refugees in Lebanon.

Meanwhile, conveying Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's congratulations on establishment of new government of Lebanon, Zarif described the achievement as the fruit of Aoun's wisdom to maintain convergence among Lebanese groups.

He also invited Aoun to have a trip to Iran.

On his two-day visit, Zarif is slated to meet Lebanese President Michel Oun, Prime Minister Saad Hariri, Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament Nabih Bari, and Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil.

Zarif's latest visit to Lebanon dates back to two years ago when he held talks with Lebanon’s newly-elected President Aoun in Beirut, becoming the first foreign minister to meet with the Lebanese head of state.

He had also met with Lebanese Prime Minister, Saad Hariri, during his previous visit to Beirut.

Many observers see the visit in line with Iran's support and content with formation of national unity government in Lebanon.
