Islamic Revolution 40 year-attempt for independence, growth: Envoy

Madrid, Feb 11, IRNA – The people of Iran have been endeavoring for independence and development since the Islamic Revolution 40 years ago, said the ambassador of Iran in Cuba in an Interview with Havana Radio.

'The Islamic Revolution is the fruit of Iranians' 100 years of attempts to free themselves from arrogance and to gain independence,' said Kambiz Sheykh-Hassani.

Comparing the former dictatorships in Iran and Cuba and reminding the common experience of the two nations in fighting them, Sheykh-Hassani said, 'People of Iran are happy to decide their own fate.'

Giving statistics on Iran's development in the past 40 years, he said that the foreign policy of Iran is based on 'Neither East, nor West', which has turned it to a stable country in the tension-stricken West Asia.

Regarding the US behavior toward Iran, he said that the 60-year sanctions on Cuba have been similarly imposed on Iran in the past 40 years and the animosity will carry on, because the US led by the 'imbalanced' Donald Trump does not respect the rights of independent countries.

Touching the nuclear deal, Sheykh-Hassani said the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was an international deal between six countries. However, although Iran was committed to it, the US sabotaged it from the very beginning and finally the US President Donald Trump announced he would withdraw his country from the deal and would sanction Iran again.

'Iran believes that enjoying the benefits of the deal is Iran's right but it has been deprived from them so far. The Instrument in Support of Trade Exchanges (Instex) was the late first step taken by Europe.'

He added that if Iran cannot enjoy the benefits of the deal, it will decide according to its national interests.

About the ties between Tehran and Havana, he said that they are at a high level in politics and hoped, with the attempts made, they will increase in economics, health, biotechnology, nanotechnology, farming, water and electricity as well.

Referring to the 17th meeting of economic cooperation that took place in January, he added that the two countries will soon enjoy the fruits of the meeting.
