Promote learning opportunities for rural women, girls – UN Chief

Tehran, Feb 10, IRNA – Learning opportunities for women and girls, particularly in rural areas should be promoted, said United Nations Secretary-General in his message on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, February 11.

'Skills in science, technology, engineering and math drive innovation and are critical to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Women and girls are vital in all these areas. Yet they remain woefully under-represented,' wrote Antonio Guterres in a message, a copy of which was obtained by the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) through the United Nations Information Center (UNIC) in the Iranian capital on February 10.

Saying that gender stereotypes, a lack of visible role models, and unsupportive or even hostile policies and environments can keep women and girls from pursuing these careers, Guterres added, 'The world cannot afford to miss out on the contributions of half our population.'

He also urged the world to try to overcome these obstacles, to tackle misconceptions about girls’ abilities, promote access to learning opportunities for women and girls, particularly in rural areas, and to change workplace culture so that girls who dream of being scientists, engineers and mathematicians can enjoy fulfilling careers in these fields.
