Iranian steel production rises 40 times in 4 decades

Birjand, Feb 5, IRNA - Iran's steel production increased by 40 times in comparison to the first years after the victory of the Islamic revolution, a senior Iranian official noted.

Deputy for the Ministry of Industry, Mining and Trade Jafar Sarqini stressed on Tuesday that 'At the beginning of the revolution, steel production capacity in the country stood at 600,000 tons while the figure is 34 million tons today.”

This is while world's steel production during the period only doubled during the period from the then 700 million tons.

However, he said, “Some may say that this growth is due to the general growth in world steel production but it should be noted that, for example, Turkey's steel production grew by only 17 percent during the same period, while Iran's steel production grew by 40 times.'

The deputy minister went on to point to the 10-fold increase in copper production in the Middle East and declared, “What happened in the steel, cement, tile and ceramic industries of Iran is dramatically notable as it was developed in the context of Sacred Defense or while sanctions were being imposed on the country.'

He continued that despite all the abnormal conditions that existed, the industry has flourished thanks to the efforts of the workers.

“In this regard all the craftsmen owe it to the revolution that has been able to grow the industry,' Sarqini said, emphasizing that development is due to the conditions that the Islamic Republic has provided for investment.”
