Iran stresses expansion of railroad links with neighbors

Tabriz, Jan 30, IRNA – Iran should boost its railroad links with the neighboring nations via different routes, including the railway system in Tabriz, said the country's Majlis (Parliament) speaker on Wednesday.

'Special attention has been given to investments in developing Iran's railroad system,' Ali Larijani said, addressing a ground-breaking ceremony held for construction of the railway linking the two cities of Sarab and Bostanabad in East Azarbaijan Province.

'To promote investments in railroads construction, we have asked for the Supreme Leader's permission to use resources of the country's National Development Fund to implement finance projects,' Larijani said.

'By implementing railroad projects, Iran intends to establish complete rail links between its eastern, western, as well as northern and southern parts, and the Leader has given the go-ahead,' he added.

Iran's Majlis speaker went on to say that in the country's next year budget, good funds have been earmarked for construction of railroads and transit routes.

Describing as very significant the position of the city of Tabriz in northwestern Iran, Larijani also said that electrification of the Tehran-Tabriz railroad is on the agenda and that it is among the high-priority finance projects of the country.
