Rouhani highlights role of Imam Khomeini in Islamic Revolution

Tehran, Jan 30, IRNA – Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said the victory of the Islamic revolution in Iran was due to the fresh interpretations the Late Imam Khomeini offered of Islam which creaed hope and inspiration in the nation and mobilized them in millions.

The President made the remarks on Wednesday when he was speaking in the Mausoleum of the late Founder of the Islamic Republic, south of capital Tehran. He was visiting the mausoleum accompanied by his cabinet members on the eve of the ten day-long celebrations to mark the 40th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic revolution in Iran.

With the 40th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution approaching, Iran's president and cabinet renewed allegiance to the ideals of the Late Imam Khomeini.

Extending his congratulations to the nation on the 40th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, President Rouhani said what took place 40 years ago in Iran was a rare historic event because a man of God from a seminary in the city of Qom stood up to warn that the region of Islam and Iran's national identity were dabger so he dusted the face of Islam and revived its true teachings and by so doing created hope in the society resulting in emergence of a new situation for Iran.

He added that at a time when many thought the era for religion to play an influential role was over and even if there were a revolution somewhere in the world, they tend to label it as nationalist or Marxist, it was hard for them to believe that an Islamic revolution could take place.

Imam Khomeini was undoubtedly the reviver of religion in the present age and helped the people to make a revolution against both the domestic and foreign powers, he added.

'He made us realize that soft power will eventually defeat hard power.'

When people were chanting slogans demanding 'Independence, freedom, Islamic Government', it was the Late Imam Khomeini who highlighted the importance of democracy as the staple of the movement and changed the people's slogan to Islamic Republic, the president added.

He added that only 47 days after the Islamic Revolution gained victory, people voted for democracy and Islam.

Referring to the Joint comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), he said that Iran's biggest political honor is that it could negotiate with six global powers from a stong position.

He said the political, legal and ethical triumphs gained in these talks will never go away.

He also implied that disloyalty of some of the signatories were quite predictable.

He also said Iranians should keep their unity in fighting the Zionists and their reactionary friends.

Touching on the recent sanctions on Iran by the US government, he said, 'This is the biggest pressure on the Iranian economy, but we will hopefully survive it.'

Today the people are governing the country, unlike the pre-Revolutionary time that only one despotic individual who served the US interests, had all the power, he said.
