Iran censures life sentence for Bahraini opposition leader

Tehran, Jan 29, IRNA - Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qasemi denounced the confirmation of lifelong imprisonment for Sheikh Ali Salman, one of moderate opposition leaders and two other moderate Bahraini protesters in the court of appeal.

Qasemi said the outrageous verdict based on false accusations against them shows that the Bahraini government, relying on the support of several foreign countries, is pursuing a plan to eliminate any voice of peaceful protest in the country.

The high-ranking official criticized the international community's silence for inhumane Bahrain's actions and also referred to the hypocritical position of the United States, noted that the United States has shown the green light to suppress the opposition by the sale of arms and full political support of the Bahraini government.

He advised the Bahraini authorities instead of full dependence on foreign support, entry into failed coalitions, and the purchase of security from abroad, to resolve the crisis in the country by eliminating police and security approaches through a genuine dialogue with the opposition and respond to legitimate demands of the people and put an end to their oppressive actions, including the outrageous sentences against protesters.
