Karate-1 Premier League semi-finals: Iran wins 2 bronzes

Tehran, Jan 27, IRNA - Two male Iranian karatekas won bronze medals at the semi-finals of the World Karate Federation Karate-1 Premier League in Paris while the female athletes failed to bag any medals in the competitions.

Ali Asghar Asiabari beat Yusei Sakiyama 3-0 to win the first bronze medal in the male kumite -75 kilograms on Sunday.

In male kumite 84+ kg, Iran's Sajad Ganji defeated Mahmoud Taha-Tarek of Egypt 2-0 and bagged the second bronze medal for Iran.

However, the Iranian team captain Zabiollah Poorshab lost 4-2 to Japanese Karateka Rikito Shimada in male kumite -84 kilograms.

The Karate1-Premier League- is the most important league event in the world of Karate. The first round of the competition, initiated in 2011, was held in the French capital Paris from 25-27 January. Dubai, Rabat, Shanghai, Tokyo, Moscow and Madrid will also host next rounds during 2019.

Mahdi Ghararizadeh, the only Iranian athlete who had made his way to the finals in male kumite -84 kilograms, failed to show up due to an injury. He received a silver medal.

Two Iranian female karate athletes failed to receive any medals. In female kumite -61 kg, Rozita Alipourkeshka was defeated by Turkish player Coban Merve.

Also, Hamideh Abbasli lost to Japanese Ayaka Saito in the semi-finals of female kumite 68+ kilograms, to leave the competition without any medals.
