Russia recognizes Maduro as Venezuelan legal president

New York, Jan 26, IRNA – Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia recognized Nicolas Maduro as legal and legitimate president of Venezuela and voiced strong opposition to any foreign interference in other countries' domestic affairs.

At the end of the UN Security Council meeting convened at the request of the US for examining Venezuela's internal situation, he told reporters that the issue of Venezuela is not a threat to international peace and security.

This is an issue only inside Venezuela not outside it, he said, noting that unlike US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s claim that only certain countries are supporting Venezuela, several other countries in the UNSC meeting voiced backing to the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Russia firmly condemns attempts to push Venezuela into an abyss of a deadly civil war, Russia’s Permanent Representative added. 'We vehemently condemn those who are pushing Venezuelan society into an abyss of a deadly strife,' he said. 'The United States is depicting a picture of confrontation between ‘Maduro’s regime’ and the Venezuelans. The picture is far from being true, as Venezuela’s leader enjoys evident support among the people.'

He also reiterated that ay reelection should take place on the basis of Venezuela’s Constitution, saying that Maduro has been elected on the basis of the constitution and is legitimate president of the country.

Venezuelan Constitution has determined how a government loses its legitimacy and this has not happened yet, Nebenzia said.

Earlier, Russia criticized the United States for recognizing Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido as the South American country's interim president.
