Iran extradites dozens more Afghan convicts

Tehran, Jan 22, IRNA- Iran says it has sent 89 more Afghan convicts back to their country as part of a bilateral agreement that will see the return of 700 convicted individuals from Iran's neighbor.

The nationals were delivered to Afghan authorities at the Dogharoon border region on Wednesday, according to Mahmood Abbasi, Deputy Iranian justice minister.

This is the fourth round of convicted Afghan nationals that have been returned to the neighboring country as part of an agreement between Iran and Afghan justice ministers signed in 2013.

So far, 650 people have been extradited to Afghanistan, he said.

Majority of the Afghans, jailed in Iran, have been found guilty of illegal entry into the country and trafficking narcotics, said the official who oversees the extradition of foreign individuals sentenced in Iran.

Also, 20 Iranian convicts, sentenced in Afghanistan, will be repatriated to the country 'soon', Abbasi added.
