Zarif: Iranians break myth of US 'omnipotence'

Tehran, Jan 17, IRNA - Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in a message reminded leaving the ousted Shah of Iran Mohammad Reza Pahlavi on Jan 16, 1979, saying Iranians have shattered the myth of US supremacy.

'Iranians forced the US client to leave 40 years ago today. 3 years ago today, JCPOA entered into force, ending yrs of securitization of Iran. In spite of US machinations v. Iran for the past 40 years— & its withdrawal from JCPOA— Iranians have shattered the myth of US omnipotence,' Zarif tweeted on Wednesday.

Mohammad Reza Pahlavi (October 26, 1919 – July 27, 1980) was the last Shah of Iran from September 16, 1941 until his overthrow by the Islamic Revolution on February 11, 1979.

Referring to part of Zarif's message as regard Iran nuclear deal also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), it is worth noting that US President Trump announced on May 8, 2018 the withdrawal from the JCPOA, which was condemned by other parties to the 2015 agreement and their emphasis to stay in the landmark international deal.

Earlier, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said, “We are working, as a Union of 28 member states and with the rest of the international community, to preserve a nuclear agreement that has so far been implemented in full, as certified by the International Atomic Energy Agency in 13 consecutive reports.'

This is while earlier, Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi criticized the European Union for delay in implementation of the SPV following the US exit from Iran nuclear deal, saying that the country deems EU responsible for not implementing the mechanism.

“The Europeans as the main beneficiary should think about the consequences of the decision, as Iran has so far fulfilled all its commitments under the JCPOA,” he said, noting that Iran’s patience is wearing thin and it is time for the EU to take its strategic decision.

“Dollar dominance as well as interconnection of the EU and US economies are among the reasons behind SPV delay,' he said, noting that the EU and even the three countries favoring SPV are also captive and hostage of the US economy in JCPOA. He noted that they should make decision for their independence.
