Iraqi Kurdistan region asks for expansion of ties with Iran

Erbil, Jan 15, IRNA – Iraqi Kurdistan's political and economic officials have called for promotion of relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The request was made concurrent with the Iran-Iraqi Kurdistan Joint Economic Seminar, which was held in Erbil.

Iran's Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad-Javad Zarif, his accompanying delegation and Iran's ambassador to Iraq were present in the meeting.

Head of the Chamber of Commerce of Iraqi Kurdistan Region Daraj Jalil Khayat said volume of trade between Iran and Iraqi Kurdistan region presently stands at more than six billion dollars.

He hoped that problems of economic enterprises active in Iraqi Kurdistan region will be removed in light of expansion of economic relations.

Meanwhile, spokesman of Iraqi Kurdistan region government told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on the sidelines of the seminar that Iraqi Kurdistan region regards Iranian Foreign Minister's Iraq visit as important and believes that the visit will result in expansion of political and economic relations in the future.

He said his country welcomes such visits and meetings and hopes outcome of the economic sessions of Iranian and Erbil commerce chambers will remove current barriers and expand relations.
