Iran's Zarif elaborates on President Rouhani's visit to Iraq

Baghdad, Jan 14, IRNA – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif elaborated on details of the upcoming visit by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to Iraq.

Zarif made the remarks Monday in an exclusive interview with the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) which was held on the sidelines of Zarif's current tour to Iraq.

President Rouhani will have a trip to Iraq on March 11, he said.

He added that the trip will be made upon an official invitation of the Iraqi side.

During the current tour, the grounds for developing relations between Iran and Iraq will be reviewed, he noted.

Referring to the fact that President Rouhani tended to have a trip to Iraq in the first possible opportunity; Zarif said it is the best time to finalize outcome of his visit and that of Iran Petroleum Minister Bijan Zangeneh.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian foreign minister pointed to his fruitful meetings with his Iraqi counterpart Mohamed Ali Alhakim and Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi on bilateral relations and regional issues.

Iran and Iraq released a joint statement on bilateral relations, regional development and common views as regard Syria, Palestine and Yemen, Zarif reiterated.

Pointing to the good stance taken by his Iraqi counterpart as regard the US unilateral sanctions against Iran, Zarif said both sides underlined continuation mutual cooperation.

Zarif also appreciated the Iraqi Prime Minister's stance, saying Abdul-Mahdi reiterated that Iraq policy is based on establishing the best ties with the neighboring countries.

Referring to the meeting with Head of the National Wisdom Movement of Iraq Ammar Hakim, he said all members of the reform coalition praised Iran's role in fighting terrorism and its support for Iraq as well as its role in maintaining peace and security in the region.

Holding talks with high-ranking Iraqi officials, taking part in Iran-Iraq joint trade conferences in Karbala and Sulaymaniyah are also on Zarif's itinerary.
