Cleric: Iraq determined to cement ties with Iran despite US sanctions

Baghdad, Jan 14, IRNA - Head of the National Wisdom Movement of Iraq criticized US unilateral acts against Iran and said anti-Iran sanctions make Iraq more determined to cement relations with Iran.

Making the remark in a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Ammar Hakim said today that Iraq is closing monitoring cruel and unilateral sanctions against Iran.

Iraq has always supported Iran, he said slamming anti-Iran sanctions.

He described US imposition of unilateral sanctions as an unprecedented act in international interactions.

Referring to extended relations between two countries, he called for boosting relations in political, economic and cultural fields.

Head of Iraqi National Wisdom Movement went on to say that Iran's role in fighting Daesh terrorist group is undeniable.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Hakim referred to US withdrawal from Syria as an important regional variable, saying it will have positive role in Syrian development.

The developments in Syria and Iraq indicate that regional countries will be able to be more integrated and to have cooperation to establish peace, he said.

Zarif appreciated the role of Iraqi political leaders in maintaining security, stability and terrirorial integrity in Iraq.

Earlier, Zarif held talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi and attended a joint press conference with his Iraqi counterpart Mohammad Ali Hakim.

Holding talks with high-ranking Iraqi officials, taking part in Iran-Iraq joint trade conferences in Karbala and Sulaymaniyah are also on Zarif's itinerary.
