Iran ranks 26 in world's organ donation

Kermanshah, Jan 12, IRNA- Head of the Center for Transplant and Diseases of Iran’s Ministry of Health said that according to organ donors' figures, the health system only responds to 15 percent of the needy in the list emphasizing that despite all the sacrifices and devotions, Iran ranked 26 in the donation of organs worldwide.

Mehdi Shadnoush said on Saturday that by 2025 the accountability and organ transplant to the patients in the waiting list will hit 45 percent which should be increased to 75 percent.

He said that half of 16,000 accidents lead to brain deaths, suggesting that 8,000 people die of brain death a year.

Shadnoush continued, “2,500 to 4,000 people will be able to donate organs.”

He said that in Iran, nearly 25,000 people are on the waiting list, adding, 'There is at least one person in the country that loses his life or is suffering pain because of the lack of donors.'
