Iran to promote cooperation with Russia, Turkey

Moscow, Jan 10, IRNA – Iran Foreign Minister's special aide for political affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari says Iran, Turkey and Russia need to maintain and upgrade cooperation as such a trend will serve as a complementary to Tehran-Moscow close cooperation.

Ansari made the announcement in a meeting with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin and Russia's special envoy on Syria Alexander Lavrentiev in Moscow on Thursday.

He went on to say that the tripartite cooperation has well proved its importance over the past several years within framework of Astana format.

'My first working visit to Moscow in the beginning of the new Christian year serves as a symbol of close Iran-Russia cooperation and the common measures they are taking at present juncture.'

The Iranian official said during his stay and meetings with his host, there will be discussions on developments in Syria and Yemen and different regional and international issues.

'Though being bipartite, today's meeting can be considered as a portion of our moves taken within framework of Astana talks along with Turkey, which is another partner to Tehran and Moscow,' Jaberi Ansari said.

'I am confident that our talks today will be very important and effective for better management of the ongoing trends and developments in the region.'

He also said Iran-Russia relations are progressing in various fields and Syria is only one area where the two sides have joint cooperation, bearing important and helpful results in connection with the two key subjects of terrorism campaign and establishment of peace and stability in Syria.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin said for his part, 'We are happy for re-holding a session on regular Tehran-Moscow talks because these sessions are of high importance, where we exchange views on issues of mutual interest.'

Vershinin said the topics to be focused on in today's talks will be the ones attended to by the United Nations and caused concern in the Middle East.

'We pay special attention to conditions in Syria and the process of settling political issues in the country; as two of its members, we work on the issue bilaterally and within framework of the Astana format,' he stressed.
