Tehran, Delhi to develop ties in defiance of sanctions

Tehran, Jan 7, IRNA – Iran's Foreign Minister will arrive in Delhi on Monday, heading a high-ranking political and economic delegation and the accompanying senior executives from public and private entrepreneurs, Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman said on Monday.

Bahram Qassemi said meeting Indian officials, participating in the joint trade conference between the two countries, attending and delivering a speech at the annual international conference of the Raisina Dialogue are among Mohammad-Javad Zarif's plans during his trip.

According to India's media, meeting his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj, India's oil minister and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi are other plans of Zarif's three-day trip to India.

According to the Indian media the trip is taking place while Delhi is attempting to balance the strategic relationship between Tehran and Washington.

'The visit will witness both sides following up on the issues discussed during Zarif’s last trip to India in May 2018, when the two countries had vowed not only to boost bilateral trade, but also to identify ways in which the Modi government could support the Iran nuclear deal, also known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), after the withdrawal of the United States from the deal and imposition of sanctions,' sources told the Indian media ThePrint.

The main goal of the visit, according to ThePrint, 'will be to discuss how to continue doing business transactions in Indian currency and all the modalities around it in the wake of the sanctions imposed by the US, while providing a platform for Iranian businesses to explore investment opportunities in India.'

Ways to expand India-Iran cooperation on the Chabahar port project will also be discussed. The project has been recently exempted from the US sanctions against Iran due to India's investment in it as well as the importance of the port to Afghanistan's development.
