Over 290,000 Syrians returned home last year: Turkey

Ankara, Jan 6, IRNA - Last year 294,480 Syrian refugees in Turkey returned to their country, the Turkish ministry of interior announced in a recent statement.

Evidence suggest that as the central government in Damascus increasingly spread its control over Syria and with the return of security to the country following the defeat of terrorists, the tendency among the Syrian refugees to return to their homeland has increased.

The statement by the Turkish ministry also suggested that last year 90 Syrian refugees, who sought to migrate to European countries through illegal sea routes, drowned in the Turkish waters and lost their lives.

Over the past year 853,274 foreign nationals were granted legal residency and 268,000 illegal immigrants were arrested in various areas of Turkey, the statement further said.

Over the same period, the Turkish government restored to their countries 55,594 illegal immigrants, most of whom were citizens of Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and Syria, it said.
