Iran breaks world record with 700 liver transplants

Shiraz, Jan 5, IRNA - The Iranian Deputy Minister for Research and Technology has said that 90% of the liver transplants in the country are donated by brain dead patients and 700 donated liver annually is a unique record in the world.

Speaking on the sidelines of the visit to Bu Ali Sina liver transplantation center in Shiraz on Saturday, Reza Malekzadeh said the number of units for identifying brain dead in the country has increased to 53 units. These units are very influential in rapid reaction and further development of liver transplantation.

He said significant increase in number of the centers for identifying brain dead patients also increased access to deceased liver donors, as well as the achievement of deceased kidney donors for needy patients, and eventually reduced pressure from living relatives of the patient for kidney transplantation.
