Iranian expatriates in China celebrate Yalda Night

Beijing, Dec 22, IRNA – Iranian ambassador to Beijing as well as Iranian students, businessmen, and expatriates in China celebrated Yalda, the winter solstice ceremony in Iranian culture, in the Chinese Capital, Beijing.

Iranian residents in foreign countries are the assets of the country and valuing them is the policy of Iran’s government and Foreign Ministry, said Iran’s Ambassador to China Mohammad Keshavarz-zadeh in the ceremony.

He stressed that the Persian language is a valuable asset possessed by the Iranians and recommended the participants to teach it to their children.

The attendants also enjoyed live performance of Setar, Tonbak, and Daf (Iranian traditional instruments) as well as entertaining programs, and poet recitations.

The ceremony was organized by the Iranian Students Society in China (ISSCN) and took place in China’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum.

Also an exhibition was held in the museum to display Iranian handicrafts, including the Persian carpet.

Yalda night (Shab-e Yalda or Shab-e Chelleh) is an Iranian festival celebrated on the 'longest and darkest night of the year.'

Yalda is a winter solstice celebration, that is, in the night of the Northern Hemisphere's winter solstice.

Similar to Iran's Yalda, Chinese people hold Dōngzhì Festival on the occasion of winter solstice, where they stay up late at night.
