Enhanced cooperation with Iran against illicit drugs, top priority: Pak commander

Islamabad, Dec 11, IRNA – Director General of Pakistan’s Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) says strengthening cooperation with Iran against illicit drugs is top priority of Pakistan.

Major General Muhammad Arif Malik was talking to Iranian media on the sidelines of sidelines of 13th Senior Officials Meeting of the Triangular Initiative on drug control in Islamabad.

He stated that cooperation of Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan on narcotics control is extremely important, and for this purpose 'we are committed to further enhance our cooperation with Iran'.

Major General Malik added that the aim of the Triangular Initiative meeting is to boost cooperation among the regional countries to stop drug trafficking.

ANF DG was of the view that intelligence sharing among Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan should be further enhanced so that all countries can take effective measures against illegal drugs and to trace the elements involved in the illegal activity.

Major General Muhammad Arif Malik added that Pakistan and Afghanistan regularly conduct joint patrolling on border region to keep a check and stop the illegal trade of drugs. He added that Pakistan wants to enhance such kind of operations with Iran also.

The commander said that Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan have joint planning cell in Iran to share sensitive information and provide assistance in anti-drug operations.

He added that Pakistan during the conference would propose to open more joint planning cells in Pakistan and Afghanistan where the officers of the three countries would perform their duties to improve anti-narcotics joint measures.
